How to get your video file

Open YouTube Studio, go to Content, click the three-dot menu next to your video and choose Download. Then upload that MP4 here. This works for your own videos, including unlisted and private ones.

Upload better captions to YouTube

Download the SRT file from your transcript page. In YouTube Studio open Subtitles, choose your video, click Add, then Upload file and select the SRT with timing. Accurate captions improve watch time for viewers on mute and help YouTube understand what your video is about.

Can I paste a YouTube link instead?

YouTube often blocks automated downloads, so links may fail. Uploading the file from YouTube Studio always works.

Can I transcribe someone else's YouTube video?

Only transcribe videos you own or have permission to use, and respect the creator's copyright.

Will SRT files work in YouTube Studio?

Yes. SRT and VTT are both accepted by YouTube's subtitle upload.
